Where Did My Money Go? Navigating Equity Crowdfunding Losses & Disappearing Act Startups

Sadly, our inbox has been receiving a steady stream of messages from non accredited investors playing an unintended game of startup hide-and-seek. The goal? Trying to figure out where on earth their equity crowdfunding investment—or even the investment platform —actually went.

In many cases, all online traces of the startup have vanished like a bad magician’s trick. Worse still, sometimes the crowdfunding platform itself has packed up its digital tents and ghosted the internet entirely. If you're reading this while staring at a bookmark for a 404 page, you aren't alone.

Below, we breakdown a few notable vanishing acts and share actionable resources to help you try to figure out what happened.

When Startups & Platforms Do a Vanishing Act

The Ghost

A prime example of the double vanishing act is 420 Real Estate. Not only did the issuer collapse, but the equity portal hosting the raise—Fundanna—also ceased operations, taking both websites down into the internet void. This situation invited SEC fraud actions into the mix.

At FundWisdom, we have tracked and cataloged transactions dating back to 2014 in our database. This makes our portal one of the few places to trace missing campaign histories:

  • Removed Listings: Companies that have quietly pulled their campaigns or had their profiles removed by platforms.

  • Folded Platforms: Crowdfunding portals and brokers that have completely shut down operations.

You can filter and investigate all offerings in our database directly using our Investment Listing Search.

Another cautionary tale is AstraLabs (previously operating as Newchip), which raised capital via Wefunder. While the campaign showcased enthusiastic retail backer profiles, the story ultimately ended in a bankruptcy fallout, leaving a long line of retail investors holding an empty bag.
